Douglas Williamson

My work combines tedious, precision based techniques with loose abstracted forms in a study of control vs. unpredictability.

Each piece is framed by cast shadows, dictated by a specific moment in nature. I collect photographs of shadows from everyday encounters to create the basework for my compositions. What space remains becomes the framework for the creative expression. Using watered down acrylics, layer over translucent layer, allows the viewer to see time built in color and depth. Seeing the wood itself through these layers enriches the connection to the natural environment and further takes the work outside my control, as the wood reacts to certain colors in certain areas in unexpected ways. This work is a constant reminder to relinquish control to a higher power - something I consistently work to do in my everyday life, as hard as it may be.
