My work is a sustained investigation into the tension between order and chaos, exploring how color relationships influence emotional perception, ultimately seeking to define our complex existence.
In this series of screen printed monoprints, varying tetradic colors are employed to make shapes vividly pop off the paper, conveying a sense of chaos or anxiety. Conversely, analogous hues and tones over monochromatic backgrounds are utilized to produce a sense of calm and tranquility. In some pieces, I allow the colors and shapes within the monoprints to inform hand-applied circles, creating an organic, free-formed patterns.
This body of work was a deep dive into experimenting with mono-printing; using transparent inks and various techniques with the screen (dripping, smudging, over and under flooding, even finger painting) to create 3-dimensional layering and color interaction. While contemplating these pieces certain words kept coming to mind-Interference, Modulation, Frequency. I began researching their technical meanings and commonalities. Mainly found in radio wave terminology, a key source for communication even today; I chose the titles based on this vocabulary. I was fascinated to find many technical definitions that, for me, had figurative subtexts or interpretations of emotional states. High pass filter: “A filter that rejects all frequencies below a certain point but which allows all higher frequencies to pass”. My mind translates this to pushing aside negative thoughts and centering one’s self on the positive.
My studio practice is a form of self-care: a deliberate effort to assuage life's instability and anxiety. This process of experimenting with forms and colors is a way to claim a sense of visual narrative control, externalizing the internal and giving shape to experiences that defy words. Our existence is fragile; my repetitive studio work is a resolute, physical attempt to organize mental and emotional upheaval, manifesting stability and healing. I offer these explorations as an openhearted invitation for the viewer to consider the curative impact of form and color in their own lives, encouraging reflection on how these can relate to their personal journey.
