“Until the Blue Sea Hushed Him” examines the hard landing of Icarus. Bodies thrust into the dirt show not only Icarus, but Daedalus too, the father and inventor responsible for this tale of hubris. An evolution of form has occurred; they are no longer singular representations of self, but subjects of interpretation, from man to bird and back. In this work, the viewer is given a scene in stasis, these figures are held by the earth, floating in our ideas of escape, flight, and ultimate descent. “...And the land was named for Icarus.”Straddled between the conception of invention, the illusion of freedom, and the inevitable contact with earth, Parris poses the question: if the sky can’t hold us, what will?
