“Breakfast Plums and Afternoon Walks” and “Evening Conversations with Violet Hues” are two of the three pieces I made while in France for my artist residency.
When creating these pieces, I drew inspiration from the space, energy, and people around me to create an atmosphere that represented what I was experiencing during my time at the chateau.
“Breakfast Plums and Afternoon Walks” captures the energy I felt in my first days at the residency. There was an overwhelming sense of excitement among all of the artists; a need to fit every possible thing into one day. The plums I had with breakfast everyday and the flowers I walked past during studio breaks where my main inspirations for this piece.
“Evening Conversations in Violet Hues” was the second piece I created while in France, taking on a calmer and moodier atmosphere, similar to what settled over the chateau after the initial first few days' excitement wore off and we all developed a routine. The objects seen in this painting commemorate the meals shared, especially dinner, among the artists. Our conversations would go well past dinner, late into the evening, a feeling of being content with what we accomplished that day and a slight buzz of excitement with what we planned to do the next day.
